Who Will Google Chrome Kill? Google Releases Chrome Beta On Tuesday!

The Official Google Blog announced that they’re releasing Google Chrome to over 100 countries tomorrow. However Chrome will only run on Windows for a while. Linux and Mac users will have to miss out on it for a few months. Chrome is NOT ready yet, it’s still in beta, so keep that in mind.
I’m not expecting it to take over right away but I think it will eventually change the way we choose our browsers and surf the web.
Google has a pretty good idea on what type of effect they want their new browser to have on people:
Because we spend so much time online, we began seriously thinking about what kind of browser could exist if we started from scratch and built on the best elements out there. We realized that the web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that we needed to completely rethink the browser.
I’m waiting to see how this new browser matches up to Firefox 3. FF3 still beats every other browser I’ve ever used. I can’t see myself giving up FF3 unless something really good comes along. The thing that impresses me the most is that they use components from WebKit and Firefox. This means that there’s Safari and Firefox blood in it, to a certain extent.
Hopefully this browser reaches the eyes of enough IE6 and 7 users. If it kills IE it was all worth it!:D When it’s all said and done, we might just have a Internet Explorer Killer on our hands:) If it doesn’t kill IE, maybe it will cause a slight shrink their user base.
What gets me most excited about this is what Google says about the project being open source:
…we are making all of our code open source as well. We hope to collaborate with the entire community to help drive the web forward. The web gets better with more options and innovation.
Yeah, I’m pretty exited to see where this is going!!! MORE POWER TO GOOGLE!!!!

I think google is on the verge of becoming microsoft
, Instead of just working with Firefox and Innovating on the present browser they are creating a new one so that they can utilize the Adsense… ?? Kinda off pisses me off what google is becoming.

A friend of mine just emailed me one of your articles from a while back. I read that one a few more. Really enjoy your blog. Thanks

Google and Microsoft are worlds apart. Google is going to be releasing this web browser as open source. Is Internet Explorer open source? Hell, no.
As for killing IE, I think that’s being a bit optimistic. IE is the default browser on Windows. As long as Windows remains dominant, IE will remain dominant. Only a small percentage of Windows users stray for the defaults.

Is it EVER gonna come out of beta?

What do you mean we Linux users have to wait?!?! Not cool, not cool at all. Just because we don’t have a operating system with so many faults that go unfixed, shouldn’t mean that we are any less important. So target those stupid IE users (more power to you!), but if your going to be an open-source project, then do not forget your open-source community.

I think FireFox will get effected more than that of Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Hel, Yes
Google has killed privacy of human beings instead. I guess everyone will mention google as the company who is responsible for this dirty event in human history.
As a java and linux programmer I prefer microsoft 100 times to google.

I love Google

If anyone suffers it will be Firefox and not IE. For real.
Most people who use Firefox are looking for an alternative browser to IE. Those using IE are *not* looking for something else. And I’m pretty certain that Firefox users will quite happily jump ship to a Google browser if it is offering them a better (to use the MS term) experience, without even thinking twice.
Futhermore, I think IE 8 is going to also have some impact on FF3. So the Mozilla guys had better watch out. The FF backlash started around the time version 3 came out, and the honeymoon period for FF is over.

[...] Microsoft / IE stand to lose nothing from this at all (in the short term), and if there are any casualties it fill be FireFox and not IE (for an opposing view). [...]

The portion of the market that is most likely to try this new product is the same portion that uses Firefox. IE will probably take a hit, but a small one. Firefox will be hit harder.
But people who use Firefox swear by it, so I don’t see many switching for a long period of time.

Isaid,
I messed around with the IE8 Beta, and so far I don’t see that many differences between IE7, minus of course being a systems hog. Most firefox users probably won’t go back to IE, just because 8 gets released…
Firefox is just too damn useful

Yeah, I’m thinking FF3 won’t get shoved aside for IE8. Peter, if what you say is true than I agree. IE8 might be faster, but it’s just another IE version, nothing special as far as I can see. Like I said, FF3 is by far the best browser I’ve ever used, hell FF2 was great.
Microsoft is just slow. IE 8, not 3 but 8 is out, hell and they still can’t beat Firefox(it’s only been out for a few years). Just goes to show that the open source developers are more innovative and unlimited than the Microsoft crews, who are suppose to be professionals at building software.

As others have said, the users targeted for this new browser are the same who already dont’t use IE. So, for Chrome to beat FF, even if it’s open source, it would have to include similar features. Most people use FF because it’s customizable. If Chrome ain’t, why switching ?

I heard they pulled some ex-Firefox and ex-Netscape people over for this Chrome project of theirs.
I must agree with the others, Google is getting “too powerful”?
In my opinion, Firefox would suffer more than Internet Explorer. However, we have yet to see the full version of it.

The interesting questions to me are not if Chrome (beta) is ready for prime time (it is not) or which established browser will suffer more (they all will.) What I find more interesting is that it appears to have all the trappings of a disruptive technology hiding in plain sight.
I wrote more about this idea here:
Google Chrome: Disruptive Technology

poor Firefox… they’re gonna take more and more of a hit as Chrome inevitably gains in popularity

Google Chrome is really fast!
Now I can sort 200,000 records inside of Browser (Chrome) just in 1 sec. (Faster than Microsoft Excel):

Thanks for you replies! I think, if Chrome does hurt FF, it will be way in the future. Not this year.
Chrome is so new it doesn’t make any sense to switch, even if you use IE.

I hesitate to use even upgraded versions of Chrome, since my last experience using it (first version) left my computer compromised; have they fixed the security issues beyond all doubt?
